The purpose of Filling the Gap is to improve the health and quality of life of vulnerable people with poor oral health through the provision of pro bono dental aid programs. We prioritise those most in need who are unable to access mainstream dental services, including asylum seekers and refugees, people experiencing homelessness, suffering from mental health issues and recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.
Filling the Gap also provides oral health education programs. We collaborate with a range of partners to deliver education and dental aid programs using our network of volunteer dentists. Our partners include the Australian Red Cross, the Poche Centre, the Centre for Oral Health Strategy at NSW Health and the Australian Dental Health Foundation.
Advocating for equity of access and better oral health care for all Australians is a key function of Filling the Gap.
Filling the Gap was formed by the Australian Dental Association NSW Branch (ADA NSW). Filling the Gap is a registered charity with deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. ADA NSW has a long history of running benevolent programs. Filling the Gap exists because of the generosity of ADA NSW member dentists who volunteer their time to treat vulnerable and at risk patients who are unable to access mainstream dental services.
The kindness of these volunteers is allowing people to live pain free and eat again. They are restoring people’s dignity by enabling them to speak and smile with confidence.
