Meet Jason

Changing lives, one smile at a time

For people doing it tough, even the smallest act of kindness can have a profound impact. For Jason, a 52-year-old who’s faced more than his share of challenges, accessing dental care through Filling the Gap has been one of those life-changing moments.

Jason first heard about Filling the Gap through Wayside Chapel, a community organisation that had been helping him get back on his feet. For over three and a half years, they supported him with housing and essential services — and when dental care became another hurdle, Wayside connected Jason to Filling the Gap.

Like many Australians experiencing hardship, Jason’s oral health had deteriorated after years of limited access to care. “I probably hadn’t seen a dentist in about six years,” he shared. “When I started getting teeth removed, I just wondered what was going to happen next. It’s taken a while, but we’re getting there.”

Through Filling the Gap’s free dental clinics, Jason received much-needed dental treatment, including new dentures. While the journey hasn’t been without complications, Jason is grateful for the compassion and care shown by the volunteer dental professionals. “The people here are awesome,” he said. “I know what people can be capable of — and it’s not always nice. But here, it’s different.”

Beyond the dental chair, Jason’s story is one of resilience. He’s working on managing long-standing mental health challenges and acknowledges the road ahead is long. “It’s been over 20 years,” he admits. “I’m nowhere near where I need to be — but at least I’m trying to make a change.”

Filling the Gap exists for people like Jason — providing essential dental care to vulnerable Australians who would otherwise fall through the cracks. Every appointment isn’t just about fixing teeth; it’s about restoring confidence, dignity, and a sense of hope.

As Jason’s story shows, compassionate healthcare can be a powerful first step toward rebuilding a life.
