Filling the Gap (FTG) has provided more than 622 appointments to disadvantaged patients this year who struggle to access both public and private dental care.

Since its launch in 2018, the dental charity was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to provide pro bono dental treatments for vulnerable individuals who lack access to essential oral health services.

Each appointment is not just a treatment; it’s a step toward restoring health, confidence and a smile. Thanks to the generous support of volunteers, partners and donors, we’re able to provide life-changing dental services to those who need it most.

Jason’s story

For Jason, 52, getting a new set of dentures was about more than restoring a smile – it was a crucial step in rebuilding his life. After years without dental care, Jason came to FTG with significant dental issues. He needed multiple extractions, and his old dentures, which had become a source of pain and embarrassment, had to be removed.

The process wasn’t easy, but it marked a turning point. As Jason’s smile was slowly restored, so was his confidence and mental wellbeing. He’s now hopeful about the future, and looking forward to regaining his health and stability.

The dental charity gave Jason more than just new dentures – it gave him a renewed sense of self-worth and a path forward.

James’ story

Aged in his 50s, FTG patient James is an oral cancer survivor. He knew something wasn’t right when he had a bad toothache and self-extracted a couple of teeth.

“It felt like a wisdom tooth was pushing down on one of the extractions,” he said. “But it wasn’t the wisdom tooth, it turned out to be the cancer which was under the tooth I had extracted.”

The process started back in 2017 with initial surgery taking half of the left side of the jaw, half his tongue and a piece out of his throat. Since radiation therapy, he has lost all sense of taste and smell.

Now waiting on further surgery, James will eventually have dentures to be able to eat. “If I can end up eating, that will be amazing,” he said.

Transforming lives

In 2024, FTG provided treatment worth $410,866, it has assisted 307 patients and provided 622 appointments, whilst a total of 28 dentures have been made. Some 55 ADA NSW members and volunteers have provided pro bono support.
