Meet April

From braces to bright smiles

At just 19 years old, April has already taken bold steps in her life—leaving her hometown of Townsville, joining a women’s rugby league program, and settling in the fast-paced city of Sydney. But her most transformative journey might be the one she’s taking with her smile, thanks to the support of the charity Filling the Gap.

April first heard about Filling the Gap through her mentor Lauren. Like many young people balancing work and passion—April works for an Indigenous-owned nursery and dreams of working in landscaping and community education—dental care was out of reach. “I’ve always been embarrassed to smile,” she shared. “I used to hold my hand over my mouth. Even though I’m a happy person, I didn’t feel confident.”

Through Filling the Gap, April has received free orthodontic treatment to correct issues with her teeth that were affecting both her health and her confidence. “I had two teeth that stuck out really far,” she said. “They were causing me pain, affecting how I ate, and made it hard to pronounce certain words.” Braces have already made a noticeable difference. “Now that they’re pushed back, I feel more comfortable eating and I’m starting to smile more.”

April is still in the middle of her two-year treatment journey, but the change in her self-esteem is already evident. “Once they’re off, I think I’ll be able to smile without thinking twice. It’s definitely grown my confidence.”

She’s also looking forward to enjoying some simple pleasures—like a steak or a bowl of noodles—without worrying about food getting stuck in her braces. More importantly, she won’t need to brush her teeth after every single meal. “It’ll just feel normal again,” she smiled.

April’s story is one of many. For people like April, who give back to their communities and work hard to build their futures, a healthy smile can be life-changing.

“Eventually I want to give back by teaching people about native plants and bush foods—stuff they can grow and cook with right in their backyard,” April said. “Only about 1% of native ingredients are being used widely. I want to help change that.”

Filling the Gap is proud to support April on her journey—not just toward straight teeth, but toward a confident, empowered life where she can continue giving back to others.
