Meet Plestys

From isolation to opportunity: How Filling the Gap helped V smile again

For 27-year-old Plestys Vytautas—known to friends simply as “V”—life took an unexpected turn after a traumatic accident left him toothless, isolated, and struggling with self-worth. Originally from Lithuania, V’s journey in Australia quickly spiraled downward after he fell while intoxicated, waking up on the bathroom floor without his front teeth.

“I fell asleep on the toilet and just fell… woke up with no teeth,” V recalls. “That’s when the downward spiral began.”

The loss of his teeth didn’t just affect his appearance—it completely changed his life. For nearly a year, V avoided social settings, stayed inside, and couldn’t bring himself to apply for work or even leave the house. “Some people say nobody notices, but that’s not true. When you have no teeth, the way people look at you… it hurts,” he says. “I had zero confidence. I’d look in the mirror and ask myself, ‘How did I get here?’”

Hope arrived in an unexpected conversation with a friend, who mentioned a dental charity called Filling the Gap. At first, V was skeptical. “I was like, ‘Filling the what?’” he laughs. “I have so many gaps in my mouth—filling the gaps sounded too perfect.”

But after making a call, things quickly changed. V was connected to volunteer dental professionals who were able to provide him with full dentures, completely free of charge. “I couldn’t believe it was real,” he says. “Just one phone call and everything started to shift.”

Today, V is preparing to re-enter the workforce, reconnect with his community, and most importantly—smile again.

“I’m most excited to get a job. To feel worthy again. To get out of the house. My teeth have been all I could talk about for a year. Now I can finally move forward.”

Filling the Gap provides vital dental care to vulnerable people who would otherwise go without. Thanks to the support of volunteer clinicians and generous donors, individuals like V are getting a second chance—not just at dental health, but at life.
